Moglet in Africa Website

We left our house in the UK in 2008 and fully intended to be in Africa not too much later. Two years on, and we've finally booked in a ferry to leave Barcelona for Tangier at the end of November 2010! It's been eventful and fun and I wouldn't change a single day of it, even if it has all taken a bit longer than expected...

Prior to this shiny new blog, there was and still is a Moglet in Africa website to wander through. It's been up and running for a while now and has loads more detail on the route, the vehicle, us, preparation, pretty much everything other than the trip diary itself. It will also be the site that gets maintained throughout Africa to detail lots more information on top of a trip diary. As well as that, it's also got a link to our original Moglet website which has more details of the original planning and preparation for leaving a house rented in the UK, personal and medical preparations, plus the driving all around Scotland we did for a few months following our original departure in 2008.

So in a nutshell, if you're just interested in the diary for the trip down Africa, the blog will be mostly all you need to worry about. But if you're interested in how we got to this point and what's happened to us so far, or want more information on the Africa bit than cant be found in a blog (GPS co-ordinates, lots of photos etc) have a look at the websites :-)

Progress...

At last, the necessary replacement parts for the Eberspacher have arrived.  'All' Jason now needs to do is whip out the old unit and replace the 12v fan with the correct 24v one then wire it all back in again, so that's his plan for today.  Fingers crossed this will work, but if it doesn't then the only part left to replace is the electronic controller, which we don't have one of...

Once the heater is up and running, we'll re-book the ferry.  I had a little look last night and currently the prices are still the same with lots of availability, so nothing to worry about at least on that front.

In the meantime, I've cleared out the parents spare room of all our junk and have almost re-packed Moglet so she's trip-ready.  There's still a few bits to do, and there probably still will be by the time we leave, but in the main we're ready to go.

I've also been amusing myself with creating letters from Father Christmas.  I set up a website last year (http://www.northpole.me.uk/) offering hugely personalised letters to kids and adults (mostly for Secret Santa presents, I assume!) as a means to hopefully add a few pennies to the travel kitty.  I got a few orders coming in and made a bit of money, and hopefully I'll get a chance to add to that a little before we leave.  Once we've left, my dad is going to take up the reins so the site can stay live and I can use it again next year.

With an eye to the future, I've also bought domain names for a business venture I have in mind.  In typical 'me' fashion I'm getting really excited about it and almost can't wait to get back so I can start things up, but I'm sure that feeling will pass once we get back on the road :-)  Plus it gives me something to do other than reading in my spare time, as I can spend hours and hours (and hours and hours!) creating a new website so I'm ready to launch whenever we eventually have to get back to reality.  In an ideal world I'd be able to combine a job with the new business and hopefully things will take off sufficiently so I can go part time and then eventually self employed.  Wouldn't it be great to be able to be your own boss doing a thing you enjoy, and something that fits in with travelling??  Look out for that flying pig!!
