Moglet in Africa Website

We left our house in the UK in 2008 and fully intended to be in Africa not too much later. Two years on, and we've finally booked in a ferry to leave Barcelona for Tangier at the end of November 2010! It's been eventful and fun and I wouldn't change a single day of it, even if it has all taken a bit longer than expected...

Prior to this shiny new blog, there was and still is a Moglet in Africa website to wander through. It's been up and running for a while now and has loads more detail on the route, the vehicle, us, preparation, pretty much everything other than the trip diary itself. It will also be the site that gets maintained throughout Africa to detail lots more information on top of a trip diary. As well as that, it's also got a link to our original Moglet website which has more details of the original planning and preparation for leaving a house rented in the UK, personal and medical preparations, plus the driving all around Scotland we did for a few months following our original departure in 2008.

So in a nutshell, if you're just interested in the diary for the trip down Africa, the blog will be mostly all you need to worry about. But if you're interested in how we got to this point and what's happened to us so far, or want more information on the Africa bit than cant be found in a blog (GPS co-ordinates, lots of photos etc) have a look at the websites :-)

Eberspacher Woes

As anyone who's familiar with the main Moglet website will be aware, we've been having problems with our Eberspacher heater, which provides our hot water and heating as and when we need it.  It started playing up a couple of months ago, and the fan inside it would sometimes freeze in place, causing the unit to start to overheat and then shut down.
So Jason ordered the necessary replacement parts, the heater promptly resumed normal service without any mechanical intervention, and the spares went into the garage for 'later'.  A couple of weeks ago the same problem reared its ugly head, so Jason took out the old unit and attempted to fit the new fan, with no luck - turns out we'd been carrying around the wrong part all this time.  Easy mistake to make from the suppliers perspective though, as Eberspacher used the same part number for two different items for a couple of years, and Sods Law says we were bound to get the wrong part sent to us.  So the wrong part was sent back to the UK and the correct fan sent out to us.  A mere three days later it arrived with us here in France, and Jason fitted it, this time with much more success.  Unfortunately, although the fan fit in no worries, it sounded like a mini jet engine when you turned it on, the heater still shut down after thirty seconds or so and the poor little motor that turns the fan was getting a bit too warm.  After much head scratching and fretting, Jason noticed the box that the fan arrived in said '12v' in little tiny letters.  Moglet is 24v, so its no wonder the poor little fan was screaming its head off and pumping out heat!  Another call to the suppliers in the UK - they only stock 12v parts, so the 24v fan needs to be ordered from Germany, sent to them and then sent on to us here.  It's a bit of a palaver, but considering at one point we thought the whole unit was knackered and we were facing a £1200 bill for a new one, a few days delay waiting for post from Germany is quite a relief!

So we're currently parked up at the parents house in France, finishing off last minute stuff, packing Moglet and packing up boxes of stuff we're leaving behind.  The ferry from Barcelona to Tangier is booked for 18th November so we should be leaving here in the next few days.  Fingers crossed the replacement Eberspacher bits arrive today or tomorrow, or we may have to bump the ferry back a few days...
